Wye Marsh - Global Big Day
Southeast Trails Bird Survey
Our next MPFN Outing will be on Sat. May 10 2025 at 10 AM. We will be participating in the Wye Marsh Global Big Day Bird Count, surveying the southeast trails of the Wye Marsh which are accessed from Ron Jones Rd. We visited this area previously in August of 2022.

Meeting Spot for the Outing: Here's a Google Maps link to the area on Ron Jones Rd. where we will meet. We will park at the end of the paved section of Ron Jones Rd. just before the downhill unpaved section and across the road from Whiskey Ridge Farms.

For most people the easiest way to get to this meeting spot would be by taking one of these 2 routes:
Route 1
From Hwy 93 turn east on Subway Rd. in Wyebridge. At the top of the hill turn left on Forgets Rd. A right turn and a little dipsy doodle on Wood Rd. will take you to Elliott Side Road. The next intersection will be Ron Jones Rd. Make a left turn and drive along to the end of the paved road.
Route 2
Take Old Fort Rd. south from Hwy 12. Turn right on Elliott Side Rd. and then right on Ron Jones. Rd.
From our meeting spot we'll head west into the area that lies to the southeast of Wye Marsh and Mud Lake. There are trails but they are not well maintained. Long pants tucked into socks, footwear that will keep you reasonably dry in wet grass, bug spray, sunscreen, water, and all the usual naturalist paraphernalia recommended.
The weather currently looks great for Saturday - sunny and 7 to 14 degrees. Light winds. And there should be lots of birds out there.
We'll aim for about a 2 hour walk. Participants are welcome to cut out early if necessary, but if you leave the group, you're on your own. Don't get lost!
For those keen on doing more birding after we've done our outing, the Wye Marsh Global Big Day event is ongoing. Our MPFN VP Anthony Taliana is covering 3 areas for the bird count. He might like some help and company.
